T2015-057 A cultivable porcine deltacoronavirus to act as a stepping stone for porcine deltacoronavirus vaccine development.

The Need

Currently, there is a lack of an effective vaccine to completely treat porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), leaving many pigs vulnerable to the virus's adverse effects, including dehydration, diarrhea, and possible death. Thus, research and development methods and technologies that will improve scientific efforts to develop an effective PDCoV vaccine are needed.

The Technology

Researchers at the Ohio State University, led by Dr. Linda Saif, have developed a cultivable porcine deltacoronavirus that aims to promote efficient propagation and plaque isolation of a strain of PDCoV. The strain is prepared by a method of cultivation through multiple passages in vivo in gnotobiotic piglets as well as through multiple passages in vitro with swine cell lines. This culture enhancement takes place using various defined additives in the culture medium to promote viral replication.

This invention is a precursor for development of a porcine deltacoronavirus vaccine to protect piglets against diarrhea and reduce mortality caused by the virus.
