The Need

Nasogastric tubes are used to give patients food and medications. Current commercially available tube holders are adhesive devices that attach to the nose. The devices put pressure on the nose and have to be completely removed to check the skin underneath or to adjust the tubes. Oxygen nasal cannulas give patients oxygen and are also held in place using adhesive devices or by placing the tubes over the ears. Current systems do not work well on facial hair, for people with unusual anatomy, or with people who have adhesive sensitivity. The care provider cannot see under adhesive holders to check the patient's skin for pressure injuries and irritation.

The Technology

Tabitha West and Jennifer Huffman at the Ohio State University developed a nonadhesive device that uses straps and Velcro to hold facial tubes and dressings in place. The device holds the medical tubes under the nose with Velcro and straps across the back of the head. The straps are padded fabric and go over the ears bilaterally. The device is comfortable, adjustable, and works when adhesives cannot to prevent medical device related pressure injuries.

  • Medical use: hospital, hospice, nursing home, and home use to keep medical tubes in place.
